CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

Maine walked through the remnants of the burning village and collected her friends one by one. Sage was overjoyed to see her, and she was glad to throw her arms around him. She was relieved when she found Maki-Mae unharmed, although her stepmom looked pale. She had salvaged the painting and tattoo needle and held them to her chest.

Maine’s hearing had only half-returned when Valkious found her and guided her to some privacy with a hand on her shoulder.

“Did we kill the dragon?” Maine asked.

Her father cursed. “That…whatever was in that chest should have obliterated her. She survived. An archer saw her take flight and retreat, probably to find her son. She must be powerful beyond imagining to have survived that. However, we did weaken her.” He paused and met Maine’s eye. “That was a mighty impressive display of force. I uh…need to tell you something.”

All around them, Chosen were cleaning their weapons and salvaging what they could from what remained of the village. The area was an inferno and would not be safe for much longer.

A couple of trolls rushed up to Valkious and saluted him, inquiring about how to proceed.

Apologizing, Valkious excused himself from her to help his soldiers save what they could from the village and their supplies.

Maine wondered what her father had been about to tell her. Also, she wondered where the Chosen would relocate since their settlement was destroyed.

In the meantime, she joined the Chosen in salvaging the remains of their home.
